ALBANY, Ga. (AP) _ A man shot a woman to death today in the post office parking lot, then ran next door to a restaurant and killed a city employee, police said.

Police chased the gunman to a house on the east side of town, where he was still holed up three hours after the slayings, said Albany Police Maj. Wilma Griffin.

The names of the victims were not immediately released.

Ms. Griffin said the woman was shot outside the main post office about 8:45 a.m. She was not a postal employee, said Joe Breckinridge, postal service spokesman in Atlanta.

The city employee was then shot at a Hardee's next door, and his city vehicle was stolen, police said. He died later at a hospital, Ms. Griffin said.

Police asked the post office to close after the shootings, but allowed it to reopen a short time later, Breckenridge said.
