Jean Fernandez new Montpellier coach next season
MONTPELLIER, France (AP) — Jean Fernandez will take over as Montpellier’s new coach next season.
The club announced on its website Monday that the 58-year-old Fernandez will replace Rene Girard, after his contract was not renewed.
Fernandez was fired as Nancy coach earlier this season. He previously coached Auxerre — guiding it to the Champions League — Marseille, Sochaux and Metz.
Girard took charge of Montpellier four years ago, after it won promotion to the first division, and guided it to the league title against all odds last season when the club finished ahead of big-spending Paris Saint-Germain.
But Girard fell out with long-standing club owner Louis Nicollin during the current campaign.
