Proposal to allow food service on county farms open for comment

August 3, 2018

A proposed amendment to the Skagit County Code that would allow farms to offer limited on-site food service is open for public comment.

The proposal, made by Roger Wechsler of Samish Bay Cheese, calls for farms to be allowed to serve products predominately processed on site to a limited seating area of 20 people.

The county code currently prohibits sit-down food service in areas zoned for agriculture, Wechsler said previously.

A July 30 planning department staff report outlines five options for the proposal, which range from taking no action to adopting a modified version of the proposal.

The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing regarding potential amendments Aug. 21.

The proposal is one of 22 being considered for the 2018 Comprehensive Plan Amendment Docket.

The public comment period will end Aug. 31. After it is closed, the Planning Commission will make recommendations to the Skagit County Board of Commissioners, senior planner Stacie Pratschner said in an email.

In the fall, the board will vote on which amendments will be adopted.
