Women No. 25 Rice reigns supreme in C-USA

DENTON — Nancy Mulkey scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half, and No. 25 Rice celebrated its first Top 25 ranking with a 59-47 victory over North Texas on Saturday, clinching the Conference USA title with the Owls’ 16th consecutive win.With star player Erica Ogwumike bottled up by the Mean Green defense in the first half and hampered by foul trouble in the second, Mulkey, a 6-9 redshirt sophomore transfer from Oklahoma, made sure the nation’s second-longest winning streak remained intact. She made 10 of 15 shots, going 8-of-12 in the second half.Rice (23-3, 14-0) led most of the first quarter before North Texas (14-12, 7-7) tied it at 12. A 10-1 run early in the second quarter put the Mean Green ahead, and they led 24-21 at the half.Ogwumike picked up two quick fouls midway through the third quarter. Mulkey had 12 points in the third, six in a closing 10-0 run that gave the Owls a 40-37 lead.Ogwumike picked up her fourth foul early in the fourth quarter. But Mulkey scored Rice’s first six points and North Texas went cold, going 4-of-12. Ogwumike had a 3-point play, her only points of the second half, that put Rice up 57-44 with less than a minute to play. She finished with eight points.Baylor 73, Iowa St. 60Chloe Jackson scored 18 points, and Juicy Landrum had 16 as the top-ranked Lady Bears never trailed and beat the 20th-ranked Cyclones at Ames, Iowa, to clinch the outright Big 12 title for the ninth consecutive year.Kalani Brown had 14 points and seven rebounds for Baylor (25-1, 15-0), which won its 17th n a row.Iowa State gave the Lady Bears something of a late scare, using a 14-2 run to pull to 65-56 with just under five minutes to go, but Landrum drilled a 3 to push the lead back to 12, and Baylor held the Cyclones (20-7, 10-5) scoreless for more than three minutes.Bridget Carleton did all she could to keep Iowa State in the game, scoring 14 points in the third quarter.
