Two Men Try To Swim Lake Erie

August 13, 1989

ERIE, Pa. (AP) _ Two men were trying to swim across Lake Erie this weekend, which has not been accomplished in nearly 14 years.

Bob North and Harvey Snell strode into the 76-degree water at 6:37 p.m. Saturday at Long Point, Canada. They were expected to reach Freeport Beach in northwestern Pennsylvania, 26 to 30 miles away, in about 20 hours.

Each man was covered with heavy coatings of lanolin. Four boats and two kayak chase-boats were following the Erie-area swimmers.

North’s wife, Louise, said her husband had a restless night before the swim.

″The hardest part is the waiting,″ she said.

The last person to swim across Lake Erie was Pat Budny, who left from Canada and walked ashore on the U.S. side on Aug. 20, 1975.
