Body found in ditch in Goldsboro

September 25, 2018

Wayne County deputies investigate the discovery of a dead body in a ditch off U.S. Highway 117 in Goldsboro on Sept. 24, 2018.

A landscaper clearing an area along U.S. Highway 117 in Goldsboro on Monday found a body in a ditch, authorities said, adding that the death might have been caused by Hurricane Florence.

The body of Marcus Jamal Wiley, 32, of Goldsboro, was found near Big Jim’s Pizza, at 1750 U.S. 117 South. Authorities have sent the body to Raleigh for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The area where the body was found had been flooded following Florence for more than a week, and the water had only recently receded, authorities said.

Investigators are reviewing security camera videos from nearby businesses and are constructing a timeline of Wiley’s last-known activities to determine when he died and whether it was storm-related.
