Marathon AAU 87, Villanova 77
VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) _ Curt Smith scored 21 points and Gregg Vaughan added 15 Sunday to lead Marathon AAU to an 87-77 exhibition victory over Villanova, which played without three starters.
Villanova’s Kerry Kittles, Jason Lawson and Chuck Kornegay did not play. Kittles had a stomach virus, Lawson a sore foot and Kornegay an ankle injury. All are considered day-to-day.
Marathon took the lead early in the first half and never gave it up.
Down 44-40 at halftime, Villanova fell behind as many as nine points in the second half before rallying within 74-71 on a layup by Alvin Williams with 6:25 to play. But Marathon outscored the Wildcats 14-4 over the last four minutes.
Joey Wright added 12 points for Marathon, while Gregg Butler and Fred Colfield had 10 each.
Williams finished with 18 points and Zeffy Penn had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Villanova. Rafal Bigus and Eric Eberz scored 13 points each.
