Sandwich City Council OKs permit for home day care
SANDWICH – Janis Gerali was granted a special use permit Monday by the City Council to operate Lil’ Monkeys Daycare in her home at 300 E. Sunset Ave.
The council approved the permit in a 6-2 vote before a packed house at City Hall, with Aldermen Les Redden and William McMahon voting against it.
Last week, the council heard objections from neighbors and some council members because Gerali has been operating the facility in her home with 16 children and four employees without the required special use permit for the business in an area of single-family homes.
The residents said the area is zoned for single-family homes, which should not include a day care center that requires a special use zoning. The plan commission had voted 5-1 against the special use permit.
Mayor Rick Olson said the home is one of several in the city offering day care services located in residential areas with no special use zoning. He said Gerali has been operating her day care business for about nine years and this was the first complaint filed against it. The business originally was in a different home but in the same area, Olson said.
