Patriots Trade Tebucky Jones to Saints

April 14, 2003

FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) _ Safety Tebucky Jones was traded to the New Orleans Saints by New England on Monday for three draft choices, two of them this year.

The Patriots will get a third- and seventh-round pick this year and a fourth-rounder in the 2004 draft. New England now has 13 picks in this year’s draft, equaling the most they’ve had since the NFL switched to a seven-round draft in 1994.

They also had 13 in 1996.

Jones, 28, was a first-round draft pick, 22nd overall, for New England in 1998. He has had 195 tackles on defense and 65 on special teams in a five-year career with the Patriots. He also intercepted four passes, recorded 2 1/2 sacks, forced six fumbles and recovered three.

But he became expendable when the Patriots signed former Chargers free agent Rodney Harrison.

New England had designated him as its franchise player, meaning he would have to be paid at least the average of the five highest-paid players at his position, which for a safety is $3.04 million. Had another team signed him as a free agent, they would have given the Patriots two first-round draft picks.
