County mails out tax bills
BROWNSVILLE - The Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector office mailed out nearly 210,000 property tax statements for the 2018 tax year Monday for a total of more than $330 million.
Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre Jr. is urging property owners to take advantage of discounts by paying taxes early.
Taxpayers who pay their property taxes in October receive a 3-percent discount, a 2-percent discount is available during November and bills paid in December will receive a 1-percent discount. There are no discounts for January and 2018 taxes are due Jan. 31, 2019.
According to the Tax Assessor-Collector’s office, it mailed out 209,970 statements for personal property and real estate accounts.
The Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector’s office is responsible for collecting taxes for 38 taxing jurisdictions and 33 street light districts. The total amount to be collected is $330,616,240.87.
Payments can be made by visiting one of the Tax Assessor-Collector’s nine branch offices throughout the county or online at www.cameroncountytax.org.
“ Property owners who cannot pay their taxes in full can take advantage of various payment plan options, and/or make partial payments at any of the Tax Office 9 Branch locations. Arrangements should be made as soon as possible to ensure that taxes are paid in full, or a substantial amount has been paid by January of 2019 to avoid any added penalties and interest,” Yzaguirre said in a press release.
