SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ San Jose forward Vincent Damphousse will undergo surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder, and the Sharks' top scorer will be lost to the Pacific Division-leaders for up to four months.

Damphousse, who has nine goals and 37 assists, will have the operation on Thursday. He was injured in a 3-2 loss to Detroit on Monday.

The center, in his 15th NHL season, had not missed a game since joining the Sharks on March 23, 1999, in a trade with Montreal and has only been sidelined for 19 games in his career.

San Jose recalled center Mark Smith from Kentucky of the American Hockey League to take Damphousse's place on the roster.
