Ohno Wins Men’s 1,500 Final
NOBEYAMA, Japan (AP) _ Apolo Anton Ohno of the United States won the 1,500 meters at the short-track speedskating World Cup on Friday.
He was timed in 2 minutes, 30.853 seconds, with four-time world champion Marc Gagnon of Canada second in 2:30.944 at Teisan Ice Skate Training Center.
Dong-Sung Kim of South Korea was third in 2:31.063, followed by Japan’s Satoru Terao in 2:31.162.
South Korea dominated the women’s 1,500. Hye-Rim Park won in 2 minutes, 30.798, while Eun-Kyung Choi came in second at 2:30.874.
China’s Yang Yang (S) was third at 2:31.049. Yang and her compatriot differentiate themselves by the first initial of the month in which they are born.
Japan’s Chikage Tanaka finished fifth at 2:31.216 in the final despite setting a Japanese record in the qualifying semifinals with a time of 2:24.872.
She was the first to make it to the finals of a World Cup this season from the Japanese women’s team.
Ohno also won the season-opening World Cup short-track speedskating event last month in Calgary, Alberta.
