Bette Davis Buried in Private Ceremony

October 13, 1989

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Screen legend Bette Davis was buried Thursday morning at the family sarcophagus during a private ceremony attended by 25 close friends and relatives in the Hollywood Hills, a cemetery spokesman said.

A graveside service was conducted at Forest Lawn Memorial Park by the Rev. Robert M. Bock of the First Christian Church in North Hollywood, said Forest Lawn spokesman Dick Fisher.

The actress, who died Oct. 6 in Paris, was buried in a marble sarcophagus bearing a statue of a woman. Flowers adorned the grave.

Fisher said Miss Davis’ mother and sister are also buried at the tomb in the Courts of Remembrance.

A public memorial service will be held in about 10 days, Fisher said.

Miss Davis, whose big-eyed looks and haughty, chain-smoking style epitomized big-screen glamour, died at the American Hospital in Paris after a long battle with cancer. She was 81.

A two-time Academy Award winner, Miss Davis made 86 movies in a career that spanned more than 50 years. In 1977, she became the first woman to receive an American Film Institute Life Achievement Award.
