Police: Man Charged After Stabbing Ex-wife’s Teen Boyfriend

September 24, 2018

A 30-year-old man tried to kill his ex-wife’s new boyfriend, who is a juvenile, early Sunday morning in West Scranton by stabbing the boy over and over with a knife, city police said. Jean Carlos Marrero, who was listed as homeless, was in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $150,000 Monday on charges of attempted criminal homicide, burglary, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, simple assault, criminal trespass and harassment. Shortly before the stabbing, Marrero met his ex-wife, Angie Velez, 32, at a restaurant to discuss his desire to see his children. While they talked, Velez explained that she has a new boyfriend and that they can’t be together. Velez told police that Marrero didn’t seem upset that she’s dating someone else. Marrero walked over to Velez’s house on the 1300 block of Schlager Street early in the morning and saw her new boyfriend, who police say is a juvenile. Marrero became irate at the sight of Velez’s new boyfriend and started to attack him, police said. Velez stepped in to try and stop them. She pulled a knife out of her purse and threatened to use it. Marrero grabbed her wrist until she dropped the weapon then picked it and started to stab her boyfriend, police said. Marrero punched Velez on her head and then fled. During the altercation, Marrero was stabbed three times but police are unsure how that happened. When police responded to the home at 2:52 a.m., they found Marrero across the street from Velez’s house. Both Marrero and the juvenile went to Geisinger Community Medical Center. Marrero was discharged and taken to the police department’s headquarters. Nursing staff at the hospital told investigators the boy was in stable condition. At headquarters, Patrolman Kyle Calvey tried to interview Marrero but he wouldn’t cooperate. Marrero’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Oct. 2.
