SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Proudly standing next to a Qantas jet he flew to Sydney, self-confessed aviation geek John Travolta on Friday brought his mission to get more people back in the air to Australia’s largest city.
As a roving goodwill ambassador for the Australian flag carrier, Travolta is piloting a Boeing 707 around the world encouraging travelers to get back in planes.
``After Sept. 11 I think there was an apprehensive feeling about travel and truly travel is the global communication tool,″ he told a media conference in Sydney. ``It keeps families going, it keeps corporations going, it keeps the world going round.″
Wearing a Qantas first officer’s uniform, Travolta said one of the reasons he was horrified by the Sept. 11 attacks was because they transformed one of the loves of his life _ airline jets _ into missiles.
``I really don’t like that something I loved so much was turned into a tool of destruction,″ he said.
Now the 48-year-old star of movies including ``Grease″ and ``Pulp Fiction″ wants his unbridled enthusiasm for flying to rub off on potential passengers in countries he visits.
``All I can say is I am officially an airline geek,″ he said.
