DOHA, Qatar (AP) _ Marcelo Rios, competing in this Gulf state for the first time, routed Gianluca Pozzi of Italy 6-2, 6-2 Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the $1 million Qatar Open.

Pozzi had beaten defending champion Fabrice Santoro of France on Monday, but he was stopped by the Chilean in 61 minutes.

``I was expecting to win the match, but I never thought that I would win so easily,'' said Rios, a former No. 1 player.

Third-seeded Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands was eliminated, losing to Fernando Vicente of Spain 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.

Nicolas Escude of France stopped compatriot Julien Boutter 6-3, 6-4 to make the quarters. Sixth-seeded Hicham Arazi of Morocco had a tough time, beating Arnaud Di Pasquale of France 6-4, 7-5.
