Philippine president to speak at BC Sunday
BOSTON (AP) — The president of the Philippines is set to attend Mass and speak at Boston College.
President Benigno S. Aquino III will attend service at St. Ignatius Church at 3 p.m. Sunday and then deliver a speech at the college’s Robsham Theatre. He is expected to discuss his country’s economy and growing role as an investment destination in Asia.
The Philippines is a nation of nearly 90 million people living on more than 7,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean.
The Aquinos have long standing ties to the college: Aquino’s parents once lived near campus and the college annually awards a scholarship in their honor. Aquino was elected in 2010. His mother, Corazon Aquino, was the Philippines’ first female president. His father, Benigno Aquino Jr., was a prominent senator assassinated in 1983.
