Names In The Game
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) _ Arizona defensive back McCann Utu has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA for posing nude in the August issue of Playgirl magazine.
Utu, a junior walk-on, has been ineligible since practice began three weeks ago, but has remained with the team and has continued to practice.
Arizona, which opens the season next Saturday, has appealed the decision.
″The NCAA says I can’t receive any money. But I’m a walk-on. (Arizona) is not paying me any money to go to school here,″ Utu said. ″I needed the money. Plus the exposure, too.″
Utu declined to say how much he was paid for the pictures.
NCAA rules bar players from capitalizing on their their athletic ability to get paid for jobs.
Utu filled out a questionnaire from the magazine, saying he was a member of the Arizona football team. Playgirl published that fact in a caption under the picture.
″From the rule standpoint that’s the problem,″ assistant athletic director Bob Bockrath said. ″He wasn’t aware of the rule that prohibits the use of an athletes name to (earn money).″
Last spring, Playgirl representatives came to the Tucson campus to find men for its photo feature ″Men of Arizona.″ Utu said he doesn’t think he would have posed had he known it was against NCAA rules.
Even if Utu wins his appeal it is not certain he will play. On the depth chart he was listed as a sixth-string cornerback.
