Boxers’ Brain Improves Slightly
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) _ A CAT scan performed on comatose boxer Stephan Johnson showed some reduction in the amount of brain swelling, his manager said Thursday.
``It’s the first time I’ve smiled since the fight,″ Kenneth Woods said.
But Johnson remains in critical condition with injuries sustained in a Nov. 20 knockout by Paul Vaden. He is being treated at Atlantic City Medical Center, but hospital officials are not releasing information about him, at the request of his mother.
Johnson, 31, of Brooklyn, suffered a brain injury in the fight. He hasn’t regained consciousness since. He contracted pneumonia over the Thanksgiving weekend and has a fever, Woods said.
