ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) _ A former colonel in the Somali army was arrested on fraud charges Friday by Immigration and Naturalization Service agents.

The charges against Yusuf Abdi Ali stem from documents he filed with INS in 1993 and 1996, according to INS spokeswoman Ernestine Fobbs.

Ali is charged with knowingly making false statements in the documents. Fobbs said he knowingly withheld information and denied his role in human rights abuses while serving under former Somali President Mohammed Barre.

Ali is being held without bond in Arlington, Va., pending a hearing before an immigration judge.
