Ironton wins softball sectional
IRONTON — Taiya Hamlet went 4 for 4 with a home run and three runs batted in to lead Ironton to a 10-3 victory over Coal Grove in a Division III sectional high school softball championship game Friday.
The second-seeded Fighting Tigers (24-1) advance to the district semifinals vs. No. 6 seed Huntington Ross (17-8) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Unioto High School in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Kylee Richendollar was 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBI. Keegan Moore went 3 for 4 and was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and allowing four hits.
Rylee Harmon smacked a two-run homer for the Hornets.
WHEELERSBURG 11, MEIGS 1: The Pirates (20-2), ranked third in Ohio in Division III, belted three home runs in a Division III sectional title game victory over the visiting Marauders (13-16). Riley Hughes went 3 for 3 with two home runs and five RBI. Bella Williams was 3 for 3. Addi Collins went 2 for 3 with three RBI. Winning pitcher Sarah Claxon hit a solo homer. Topseeded Wheelersburg plays fourth seed Minford in a district semifinal Thursday at Unioto High School.
BOYD COUNTY 12, BELFRY 4: Bailey Conley went 2 for 4 and drove in three runs and was the winning pitcher as the Lions beat the Pirates. Olivia Mulhearn went 3 for 4 with two RBI. Graci Borders was 2 for 3.
POINT PLEASANT 5, WINFIELD 1: Kyelar Morrow drove in two as the visiting Big Blacks defeated the Generals (25-8) in the championship game of the Class AA, Region IV, Section 2 tournament. Miles Williams and Brody Jeffers each were 2 for 4 for Point Pleasant. Hunter Blain was the winning pitcher.
FAIRVIEW 5, FAIRLAND 4: Ty Hutchinson’s walk-off RBI single gave the Eagles (16-13) a victory over the Dragons (17-7) in Westwood, Kentucky.
BOYD COUNTY 16, FREDERICK DOUGLAS 6: B.B. Layne went 3 for 5 with a homer, a triple and four RBI as the Lions beat the Broncos in the Fayette County Invitational Tournament.
RUSSELL SPLITS: Vikings’ ace A.J. Hacker pitched a complete game as Rowan County beat the Red Devils 7-1 in the Viking Classic. Russell came back behind the pitching of Zack Pope to beat Prestonsburg 13-6 in the second game.
LAWRENCE COUNTY 6, MONTGOMERY COUNTY 0: Bryce Blevins threw a three-hit shutout and struck out seven to lead the Bulldogs over the home-standing Indians. Jackson Feltner drove in three. Lawrence County also lost 5-0 to Rockcastle County.
RACEL AND 12, MASON COUNTY 2: Zach Francis went 3 for 3 and Jake Heighton 3 for 4 as the Rams beat the Royals. Rony Mills was the winning pitcher.
MINFORD 12, GREENUP COUNTY 1: Luke Lindamood hit a three-run homer to help the Falcons defeat the Musketeers in Lloyd, Kentucky. Ethan Lauder went 2 for 4 and drove in four. Elijah Vogelsong went 2 for 4 with two RBI.
