Former Iranian Army Chief Of Staff Dies
PARIS (AP) _ Gen. Bahram Aryana, a chief of staff of the Iranian army during the late Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi’s reign, has died in a Paris hospital, relatives said Tuesday.
They said Aryana died Friday, but did not give the cause of death. His age was not immediately available.
Aryana became chief of staff in 1967 and left Iran in 1979, the same year the shah fled Iran because of the revolution led by Ayatolah Ruhollah Khomeini, the nation’s current strongman. Pahlavi died of cancer in 1980 in Egypt.
Aryana founded the Azadegan movement in France that opposes Khomeini. Its most notable success was the capture in July 1981 of a ship the French were preparing to deliver to Iran.
