The Roastery Coffee Kitchen opens flagship location attached to San Felipe H-E-B

April 11, 2019

The Roastery Coffee Kitchen continued its expansion in the Houston market with the grand opening of its third location, attached to the H-E-B at 5895 San Felipe St. on Monday, April 8.

The concept, which was launched last year by Jason Giagrande, who is part of the esteemed FOUR J team along with chefs Jonathan Waxman, Jimmy Bradley and Joey Campanaro, who have been working with H-E-B developing products over the last six years.

The flagship location is approximately 7,600 square feet, seven times the size of sister locations in Bellaire and The Heights, including a large covered patio. As the brand’s flagship location and local coffee roasting facility, it offers a broader menu including coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner items with a full bar featuring craft and coffee-centric cocktails.

A chic and modern design showcases marble coffee counters, chevron wood accents and stained concrete floors. Guests can gather at high top tables, conversation vignettes made cozy with plush chairs in shades of the Roastery’s signature cool blue, community tables or intimate dining areas. The outdoor patio is dog-friendly with flat screen TVs and a dedicated play area with games for kids and adults. A custom music-centric mural is in the works by local artist Anat Ronen, enhancing the outdoor space and setting the mood for an outdoor stage that will feature live music.

Master roaster and licensed quality grader Jennifer Stone ensures the highest standards when it comes to texture, taste, context and the complete sensorial experience associated with Four J coffee. Exclusively utilizing specialty coffee grown with sustainable harvesting practices, beans are sourced from Indonesia, Colombia, Honduras, Kenya and Brazil from the top 1% percent of all global production. Stone and the Four J team are developing a special blend roasted at this location coined “H-Town Roast” that pays homage to the diversity of the city.

The Roastery Coffee Kitchen is the only restaurant concept in Houston which houses a Giesen coffee roaster and it is on full display for guests to enjoy. A “roaster circle” offers prime seating to take in views of the Giesen and the Roast Masters at work.

The Roastery Coffee Kitchen goes well beyond coffee, tea and pastries. Giagrande’s Culinary Director Matt Johnson and Executive Chef Kent Domas, most recently from Alice Blue, have developed the menu to include small plates, sandwiches, large plates, pasta, brick-oven pizzas, seasonal sides, desserts and a kid’s menu. The team also recently added Pastry Chef Sarah Schnitzer, formerly of Pax Americana and The Pass & Provisions to create adventurous pastry & dessert options.

The menu is designed to be refined but fun — some highlights from the menu are the confit duck wings, seasonal vegetable salads, summer squash fritters, a whimsical spin on a lobster roll using crawfish, gulf shrimp and grits, short rib baked rotolo pasta, a full assortment of gourmet brick oven pizzas and more.

The bar is made up of custom shelving showcasing spirits and liqueurs with eight local beers on tap. The cocktail program consists of classic and craft cocktails along with a section dedicated to craft coffee cocktails both hot and cold.

The Roastery Coffee Kitchen will act as host to various events, including live music concerts and latte art competitions, among other happenings. The Roastery’s next location will be at the future Buffalo Heights H-E-B.

The San Felipe location will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday; and 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday.
