Harvey Korb -- St. Charles

December 28, 2018

Harvey Ernest Korb, 90, of St. Charles, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018, at Cottagewood Senior Communities in Rochester.

Harvey was born on June 22, 1928, in a three-room farmhouse in Calio, N.D., the third child and only son of Anna (Janowski) and Peter Korb. He graduated from Egeland High School and attended North Dakota State University with majors in Chemistry, Biology and Life Science with a minor in Psychology.

Harvey married Clara Hoffart in 1950. They had seven children. They later divorced. Mr. Korb began his teaching career in Napoleon, N.D., where he taught Adult Agriculture Education to military veterans. In 1956, their young family moved to Butterfield, Minn., for his first public school teaching position. Mr. Korb taught Agriculture, Life Science, Biology and Chemistry and served as the adviser of the Future Farmers of America (FFA). In 1965, they moved to St. Charles, where he taught the same subjects, continued advising FFA and was the assistant principal for a number of years.

In addition to teaching, Mr. Korb had a vested interest in all aspects of the school culture. He influenced students in life skills such as respect, accountability, and integrity in addition to their academic achievements. He often referenced a quote from the movie, “South Pacific,” “You have to be taught before it’s too late, before you are six or seven or eight.”

Harvey was an active member of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church as a Eucharistic Minister. His favorite pastime was involvement with his family and friends. His summer employment was spent painting houses, barns and other outbuildings. Upon retirement in 1990, he continued painting and wall papering. Harvey developed a new found interest in world travel and visited many countries. His flowerbeds and rose gardens were a colorful fixture around his home on Church Avenue. He enjoyed caring for and riding his horse, Penny.

Harvey is survived by his children, Marcia (Dave) Morrill of Rochester, Carroll (Dennyce) Korb of Rapid City, S.D., Marge (George) McIntire of St. Charles, Mary Abbott of Rochester, Laura (Scott) Johnston of San Carlos, Calif., and Jyll (Mike) Buringa of St. Charles; grandchildren, Mical (Jon) Peterson of Richfield, Dana (Josh) Asleson of Rochester, Melissa (Rob Dempsey) Korb of Houston, Texas, Tamara (Mark) Schroeher of Minneapolis, Brian (Elle) McIntire of St. Charles, Amanda Vermilya of Rochester, Erin Abbott of Antigo, Wis., Whitney (Ian) Prock of Minneapolis, Adrian Abbott of Eau Claire, Wis., Peter, Benjamin and Adam Johnston of San Carlos, Calif., Laura Buringa of Rochester, Mark, Emilee and Grace Buringa of St. Charles; 12 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Eileen Beck and Sister Maris Stella Korb.
