WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Bush administration has decided to withdraw an offer to North Korea to resume security talks because of a lack of response from Pyongyang, an administration official said Tuesday.

The official, asking not to be identified, said the U.S. decision also was influenced by a deadly clash between naval vessels of the two Koreas Saturday in South Korean waters.

South Korea and the United States blamed North Korea for the incident, which occurred two days after the administration had proposed that U.S.-North Korean talks on security issues resume next week.

The senior official said that given the lack of response from North Korea to the U.S. proposal five days after it was submitted, the United States was not in a position to go ahead with the talks.
