Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Selects SmithBucklin for Association Management
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec 18, 2018--The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) has selected SmithBucklin, the association management and services company more organizations turn to than any other, to provide association management. Steven C. Kemp, CAE, serves as executive director, and its headquarters are located at 2025 M St., N.W., Washington, D.C.
Founded in 1957, HFES is the world’s largest scientific association for human factors/ergonomics professionals. HFES serves the needs of members and the public by promoting and advancing the discovery and exchange of knowledge concerning the characteristics of human beings that are applicable to the design of systems, products, tools, and environments of all kinds. The society’s 4,500 members work in educational institutions, companies, government and military research centers, and independent consultancies in 58 countries. About 15 percent of members are students.
After the retirement of its longtime executive director, HFES’s Search Committee used a thorough and multistep process that resulted in the selection of SmithBucklin to provide association management. In making its determination, the Search Committee cited SmithBucklin’s proven capabilities as well as its values, culture, and vision for achieving growth.

SmithBucklin will provide HFES with a complete management solution. In his role as executive director, Kemp will work with the HFES board of directors to establish strategic objectives. He leads a team of association professionals that are responsible for the association’s administration, including membership recruitment and retention, financial management, marketing and branding, communications and publications, education administration, government relations and advocacy, and technology.

Kemp, a 19-year veteran at SmithBucklin, has overseen all aspects of association management, including strategic planning, membership services, annual conference oversight, advocacy, and marketing. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in journalism from the University of Maryland. In addition, he earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) in June 2004, and he has served ASAE in a variety of volunteer roles.
