HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) _ Elmore Armstrong ran for two touchdowns, including a 3-yard score late in the fourth quarter Saturday that lifted Sam Houston State to a 30-25 victory over McNeese State.

The Bearkats’ Chris Hall set up the winning score by recovering a fumble at the McNeese 36 with just over five minutes remaining. After a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on the Cowboys, Armstrong rambled into the end zone.

Sam Houston (3-5, 2-1 Southland Conference) struck on the first play of the game, when Dedrick Manigo returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown. Marcus Hajdik’s 35-yard field goal made it 10-0 after one quarter.

McNeese (2-5, 0-2) picked up a field goal, a safety and Earnest McGowan’s 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter, but Armstrong’s first touchdown, a 2-yard run, gave Sam Houston a 17-13 halftime lead.

Bennie Wylie scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter for the Bearkats before the momentum swung in McNeese’s direction.

Tim Leger threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Donnie Ashley to bring the Cowboys within 24-19 with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter. Sam Houston’s Joey Mouton then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Jerod Jones recovered, running 5 yards for the score that put McNeese ahead 25-24.

Leger completed 15 of 34 passes for 283 yards but was intercepted three times.
