September 30, 2018

Those looking for a career change nearly anywhere in Texas can consider the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and its current opportunities.

TDCJ operates the largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for statewide criminal justice for adult offenders. It’s also the largest state agency, with more than 38,000 employees.

In addition, TDCJ manages offenders in state prisons, state jails and private correctional facilities.

It supervises offenders released from a prison on parole or mandatory supervision, and manages manage funding and certain oversight of community supervision.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes correctional officers as being responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been sentenced to serve time in jail or prison.

The headquarters for TDCJ is in Huntsville, but job opportunities are statewide at various locations.

Jeremy Desel, director of communications at TDCJ, said current jobs in hot demand are correctional officers and maintenance supervisors, with a recruiting bonus offered for these jobs.

“There’s a shortage across the state,” Desel said.

TDCJ hosts recruiting events throughout Texas and posts openings on its website, Twitter and Facebook pages. Why should job seekers apply for jobs at TDCJ?

“There are great benefits, including a pension when you reach retirement age,” said Desel.

There is up to $5,000 recruiting bonus for new correctional officers, met under specific conditions.

New applicants are required to schedule and complete pre-employment testing for open positions. After meeting basic eligibility criteria, applicants will need to schedule correctional officer pre-employment testing.

Maintenance roles

Maintenance workers must be certified in their specific trade to be considered for employment, Desel said.

To be eligible for the $5,000 recruiting bonus for new maintenance supervisors, there are requirements that mustbe met.

You must be a full-time maintenance supervisor who was newly hired or graduated from the academy on or after April 27, 2018.

Also eligible are TDCJ retirees who are rehired as full-time maintenance supervisors after 90 calendar days of retirement from TDCJ, or TDCJ former employees rehired as full-time maintenance supervisors after one year of separation from TDCJ.
