Grega, Sharkey Shine For U.S.
Two former Wyoming Valley Conference standouts made all the difference Tuesday night for the U.S. women’s national field hockey team.
Valley West graduate Danielle Grega netted two goals in just her second international game, and then Wyoming Seminary graduate Kat Sharkey scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win against Belgium at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster County.
Grega scored her first goal just 32 seconds into the game, giving the U.S. a 1-0 lead when teammate Lauren Moyer pushed the ball into the circle and Grega followed through with the score.
It was Grega’s first goal with the U.S. senior team.
“I was just really excited,” Grega told Lancaster Online. “Our goal was to come out really strong today. The ball was just loose in front of the circle and I was just hungry to put it in the goal.”
After Belgium tied the game, Grega scored again to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Belgium once again tied the game, 2-2, before Sharkey, of Moosic, scored on a rebound in the final minutes to go ahead and stay ahead, 3-2.
Tuesday’s match was Game Two in a three-game series between the U.S. and Belgium.
Belgium won the opener, 2-0, on Monday.
The series will conclude with the final game at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
