Cubs sign Reliever Bobby Ayala
CHICAGO (AP) _ The Chicago Cubs signed reliever Bobby Ayala on Friday to a contract for the remainder of the season and recalled outfielder Bo Porter from Triple-A Iowa.
Ayala, 30, was 1-6 with a 3.68 ERA in 53 relief appearances with Montreal before he was released Aug. 27. He struck out 64 batters in 66 innings.
The right-hander has pitched for Cincinnati, Seattle and the Expos in his eight-season major league career. He has a 37-43 career record with 59 saves and a 4.84 ERA.
Porter, 27, joins the Cubs for the second time. He appeared in five games May 9-23, going 0-for-1 at the plate. In 111 games at Iowa, Porter batted .292 wth 86 runs scored, 24 doubles, 27 homers and 64 RBIs.
