Turner Gives Conservation Grants

November 2, 1999

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) _ Ted Turner, with his wife, Jane Fonda, at his side, stood on a windy hill Tuesday to announce $50 million in conservation grants from his U.N. Foundation.

Turner said 40 percent of the projects will be in Africa, while Asia and South America will also benefit.

``We are trying to be like Robin Hood, taking from the rich and giving to the poor,″ the CNN founder said.

The foundation is one of two organizations set up in 1997 to administer Turner’s donation of $1 billion to U.N. causes.
