Guerrilla Blows Himself Up, Kills Two Police

April 13, 1988

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) _ A black guerrilla pulled the pin on a hand grenade after police seized him today and killed himself and two white officers, authorities said.

Five hours later, a second guerrilla was shot to death when he hurled a grenade and fired an AK-47 automatic rifle at police who tracked him down in Mpumalanga, near Durban, police said.

Three residents were wounded by the gunfire, police said.

Police were searching for a third man and said all three were from the outlawed African National Congress, the main guerrilla group fighting South Africa’s white-led government.

The suspects were not identified.

The incident began at about 1 a.m. when police patrolling the black township of Mpumalanga spotted three black men, one carrying an AK-47 automatic rifle, according to a statement from police headquarters in Pretoria. The black men fled, and the policemen chased them, police said.

The first one to be caught set off the grenade and blew himself up along with two constables, police said.

A third policeman was slightly wounded when he was struck in the shoulder by shrapnel, police said.

Police said they found the second suspect at about 6 a.m. and shot him when he threw a grenade and opened fire at them.
