Childhood Hunger Rally Week coming soon
FLORENCE, S.C. – With 1 out of 4 children in Florence County facing childhood hunger, Help 4 Kids Florence President Diana Welsh hopes to see the 2019 Childhood Hunger Rally Week grow this year.
The organization is serving 2,489 children in the county now.
The rally week will raise awareness for childhood hunger in the area from Jan. 20 to 27. Help 4 Kids Florence also will conduct Vienna sausage drives in various locations throughout the county.
This year, the Florence County Council will declare during its Jan. 17 meeting that the third week of January will be Childhood Hunger Awareness week across the county.
The awareness week is a way for the people of Florence County not only to see the need in the area for food and the effect it has on children but also learn what they can do about it, Welsh said.
“We have a lot of volunteers who will say that the few hours they spend do more for their hearts than the food for the children, because it’s a tangible way that they can make a difference in improving the lives of the child,” Welsh said.
Welsh said Help 4 Kids Florence has received feedback from the schools that the food it provides makes a difference in the children’s lives.
“Not only does the food nourish the body and give them strength and energy, but also having a family meal that they can count on and share is a bonding experience,” Welsh said. “If they didn’t have the food, they wouldn’t have the family unit.”
Welsh said all of the elementary schools in each district of the county will hold Vienna sausage drives. KJ’s, First Citizens Bank and CSP Insurance Services will serve as donation sites as well.
A number of churches also will take donations, such as Highland Park Methodist Church, Lake City First Baptist Church and Union Baptist Church.
