It’s ugly: Old federal courthouse will be razed in Biloxi
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi bank is planning to demolish a former courthouse that many people consider an eyesore.
The Sun Herald reports the federal courthouse in downtown Biloxi has been empty since 2003, when a replacement opened in Gulfport. The Biloxi building is beige and blocky, with narrow rectangular windows.
Community Bank recently bought the property and will tear it down to build a new financial services center.
The bank’s market president, Eric Chambless, says the center will be a beautiful building “consistent with the character and charm of Biloxi’s historic downtown.”
The Biloxi Architectural and Historical Review Commission recently approved plans for the old courthouse to be razed.
Bill Raymond, historical administrator, says he has gone to conferences that used a photo of the courthouse to show what doesn’t work aesthetically.
