New lights on NH-Maine bridge for New Year’s Eve

November 26, 2013

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) — The towers and piers of the new Memorial Bridge connecting New Hampshire and Maine will be lit on New Year’s Eve, in conjunction with Portsmouth’s First Night celebration.

Lights on the approaches to the bridge on the Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine, sides, are expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2014.

A committee working on the bridge lights says the process of installing, positioning, aiming and programming energy-efficient, color-changing LED lights has delayed lighting the total bridge.

The new $81.4 million Memorial Bridge between Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine, opened in August. It replaces one that was built in 1923.

“There is a lot of interest and excitement around the lighting of the Memorial Bridge, and now, that the memorial plaque is in position and the Veterans Memorial Park has opened many are wondering about when the lights will go on,” said Jon Di Gesu, committee spokesman. “We ran into several technical issues when it came to lighting a bridge this large — we needed to tighten beam spreads, account for the staircases and address the movement issues of this bridge. This led us to rethink the position of the fixtures and take a more stepped approach to completing the lighting project.”
