SMALL TOWN-POPULATION DECLINE

ATLANTA _ More than a third of small towns in Georgia lost population in the last year, highlighting the challenges of reviving rural areas. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that new census estimates show that Camilla fell below 5,000 residents. Sparks fell below 2,000, Fort Gaines dropped below 1,000 and Milan fell to 661 residents for a loss of 7% of its population. All four towns are in South Georgia. SENT: 480 words.

WASHINGTON _ A flood of laws banning abortions in Republican-run states has handed Democrats a political weapon heading into next year’s elections, helping them paint the GOP as extreme and court centrist voters who could decide congressional races in swing states, members of both parties say. The Alabama law outlawing virtually all abortions, even in cases of rape or incest, is the strictest so far. Besides animating Democrats, the law has prompted President Donald Trump, other Republican leaders and lawmakers seeking re-election next year to distance themselves from the measure. By Alan Fram. GREENVILLE SCHOOLS-TEACHER PAY

GREENVILLE, S.C. _ Teachers in Greenville County Schools will be paid a starting salary of $40,000 — the highest out of any school district in South Carolina — after school board members unanimously approved a 6-mill tax increase. Under the $668.4 million budget, teachers would get a 5% to 10% raise and reduced class sizes while adding counselors at the middle and high school levels. Also included is a minimum 4% salary increase for support personnel, including principals, nurses and aides and district-level administrators. SENT: 399 words.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. _ Alabama country singer Dexter Roberts has come in third place on Season 16 of NBC’s “The Voice.” Roberts competed on celebrity country crooner Blake Shelton’s team during the reality series, Al.com reported. The 27-year-old from Fayette was beat out for the top spot by Maelyn Jarmon, a 26-year-old pop singer from Frisco, Texas. SENT: 374 words.

BACKYARD BALD EAGLE RELEASE

METAIRIE, La. _ A young bald eagle found soaked and stumping along a street in the Louisiana neighborhood where it hatched will be released Tuesday in the same area. The bird’s parents have nested for a couple of years in a tall live oak in a subdivision back yard in Metairie, a New Orleans suburb. A neighborhood resident brought the mottled brown eaglet to the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine’s Wildlife Hospital on May 11, after making sure it needed help.
