McCoy wins 125cc race; Aoki clinches world title
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Australian Garry McCoy won Sunday’s 125cc race at the Australian Grand Prix and Japan’s Haruchika Aoki finished second to seal his second straight world title.
McCoy, who was dueling for the lead throughout the race, covered 26 laps of the Eastern Creek circuit, a total of 63.49 miles, in 42 minutes, 12.903 seconds on his Aprilia.
It was only the second grand prix win of McCoy’s career. He averaged 90.242 mph and finished just 0.049 of a second ahead of Aoki, who surged late in the race on his Honda.
Aoki’s compatriot Masaki Tokudome was third on an Aprilia, with Spanish veteran Jorge Martinez fourth, also on an Aprilia.
Aoki, 20, won the title for the second straight year. He went into the race needing only to finish in the top 12 to edge out Tokudome for the title and finished the 15-race season with 220 points to Tokudome’s 193.
It was his final race in the class before moving up to 250cc.
