Robert AveryMay 24, 2019

Now that another school year is over, the annual parade of youth sports camps in the city gets under way starting in June.

KETHAN FIELD HOSTS RUPP’S BASEBALL CAMP

The long-running Deer Park Championship Baseball Camp will unfold the week of June 3-6 from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

Parents can register for the camp online at https://deerparkisd.store.rankonesport.com/Camp/List

But children can also register on the first day of the camp. Cash payment will only be accepted that day.

The cost per camper is $100. Campers should come dressed in baseball attire, but because it will be warm, shorts are fine too. Campers should bring a bat, glove, tennis shoes and something to drink. Steel cleats are not permitted.

The Deer Park High School coaching staff, including head coach Chris Rupp along with former San Diego Padres pitcher Donnie Elliott, will help youngsters improve their game in numerous ways. No doubt, Elliott, a Deer Park High graduate, took part in his share of baseball camps when he was of elementary school age.

Campers will also learn from actual varsity players as they instruct campers on how to enhance their fundamental skills such as throwing, catching, batting and running the bases.

Campers will be broken into small groups and move from station to station over the course of the four-day camp. Much of the instruction will take place on Jim Kethan Field where Deer Park’s program marched to the 2017 Class 6A state championship.

Participants will also play games and have fun putting these skills to use in simulated games right there on Kethan Field.

The camp’s last 30 minutes on June 6 will be reserved for its famous slip and slide finale. Along foul territory by right field, campers will practice their “sliding” technique after some liquid soap and running water from the hose has been applied to a large plastic sheet.

CAGER CAMP AWAITS JUNE 10-13 ARRIVAL

The city’s basketball-loving youngsters are all invited to the annual Cager Club Youth Basketball Camp, scheduled for June 10-13.

Parents can officially register their child at https://deerparkisd.store.rankonesport.com/Camp/List. Under sport, one will see a drop down menu of the various sports. Locate basketball (M) and begin the registration process.

Then from 12:30-3:30 p.m., incoming ninth graders will be at the South campus for their four-day camp.

Head coach Ryan Bright, his staff and varsity players will be on hand to show the campers the ways in which they can greatly improve their game. Dribbling, shooting, rebounding, it will all be discussed and demonstrated during the four days of fun on the court.
