Person fatally shot in exchange of gunfire with Florence Police

FLORENCE, S.C. — A man was fatally shot Saturday by a Florence police officer outside an Interstate 20 motel during the investigation of a person with a gun report.

According to the Florence Police Department, officers went to the Hilton Garden Inn at 12:22 p.m. and while an officer was speaking with the complainant a man with a gun appeared, gunfire was exchanged and the man was wounded.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identified the man as Jethro Benjamin and said he died a short time later at a hospital. Benjamin was 68.

Von Lutcken said an autopsy would be performed Sunday morning at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division has been called in to investigate, according to the police department.
