WESTFORD -- Emergency responders are searching a quarry for a swimmer who reportedly jumped into the water and did not resurface earlier today, according to several media reports.

WCVB reported that a swimmer jumped into Merrill’s Quarry, just off of Vineyard Road near the Westford-Tyngsboro line, shortly before noon Tuesday and did not re-emerge. NBC10 Boston, citing police sources, identified the swimmer as a 17-year-old boy and reported that he had been trespassing on the property with friends who unsuccessfully tried to pull him out of the water.

Police did not respond to an immediate request for comment from The Sun. A Sun reporter was turned away from the quarry by a Tyngsboro police officer, who described it as an “active crime scene.”

Authorities have warned for years about dangers that trespassers face in the quarry, which was featured in the 2012 film “Grown Ups 2.” A 26-year-old Nashua man drowned in its waters in 2013, and others have been critically injured after falling long distances or hitting rocks.
