Local Roundup: Fitchburg Girls Earn First Victory

FITCHBURG -- Sophomores Mia Cavins and Rachel Romero scored eight points apiece to power the Fitchburg High School girls’ basketball team to its first victory of the season on Friday, a 40-26 win at home over Burncoat.

Junior Madyson Jarrett scored six points in the victory, while Aleysha Santos and Emma Auger chipped in with five points each as the Red Raiders improved to 1-5 on the year.

Boys’ basketball

St. Bernard’s 66

Main South 46

Keegan Sharp had a big game, recording 19 points and 14 rebounds, to lead the Bernardians (3-3) to victory. Jakai Alexandre also fueled the offense with a 20-point effort, and Walter Morales Jr. added 12 points in the victory.

Gardner 43

Quabbin 36

Tim Chipman and Feliz Morales finished with 11 points each as Gardner improved to 3-5 on the season.

Hudson 57

Oakmont 41

Evan Pappas and Dan Dumas led Oakmont Regional (2-6, 1-2) in defeat, scoring 16 and 12 points, respectively.

Girls’ basketball

Shrewsbury 50

Leominster 30

Leominster fell to 3-2 as Holly Hruskoci poured in 19 points for 5-2 Shrewsbury.

Hailey Monville scored nine points for LHS and Skylar Finnegan chipped in with seven points. Leominster hosts Algonquin Tuesday night.

Monty Tech 45

Worcester Tech 26

Erica Regan scored 14 points as Monty Tech (5-1) continued its hot start to the season. Also for the Bulldogs, Emily St. Thomas scored 11 points and Ashley Girouard added six.

Boys’ hockey

Lunenburg 3

Oakmont 0

Jacob Mauro, Matthew Albert and Sean Simpson each scored one goal, and netminder Anthony Firmani made 18 saves in a shutout perfomance as Lunenburg/Ayer Shirley improved to 3-2-1 on the young season.

Goalie Evan Taylor finished with 26 saves for Oakmont Regional (1-5).
