It’s his birthday

Auto racing legend A.J. Foyt turns 84 today. He was born Jan. 16, 1935, in Houston.

Tried to bring track here

Foyt led a failed attempt to bring a NASCAR racing track to Otto Township in 1997. The bid failed in large part because the nearby Chicago Speedway was built in Joliet. The speedway now hosts NASCAR events on an annual basis.

Followed father’s footsteps

Foyt’s father, Tony, was a mechanic and auto racer himself. When A.J. was 3 years old, Tony built him a small open-wheel race car to drive around their backyard.

An ace at Indy

Foyt won a record-tying four Indianapolis 500 races during his four-decade career. The victories came in 1961, 1964, 1967 and 1977.

Century’s best

In 1999, The Associated Press named Foyt and Mario Andretti the co-Drivers of the Century.
