November 4, 2014

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A Springfield man has pleaded not guilty to driving drunk when police say he hit three young teenagers in a crosswalk, critically injuring one of them.

Fifty-eight-year-old Pedro Gonzalez was ordered held on $10,000 bail at his arraignment Tuesday on drunken driving charges and a crosswalk violation.

Authorities say two boys and a girl were struck on Chestnut Street near Calhoun Park at about 8:45 p.m. Monday.

Police said Tuesday one of the boys has a serious head injury and is in critical condition. The other teens had non-life-threatening injuries.

A witness said the teens were in a crosswalk when they were struck by the commercial-sized van.

Gonzalez is scheduled to return to court Jan. 8.
