Kristina Brandi First-Round Winner

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) _ Second-seeded Kristina Brandi of Tampa, Fla., easily moved into the second round of the $25,000 USTA Women’s Challenger of Clearwater on Tuesday, defeating Canada’s Renata Kolbovic 6-0, 1-0, retired.

Kolbovic retired from the match with an ankle injury.

The opening round of hardcourt tournament at the McMullen Tennis Complex was delayed one day by Monday’s steady rain.

Mashona Washington of Houston, whose brother, MaliVai Washington, plays on the ATP Tour, won her first-round match by defeating Reka Vidats of Hungary 6-3, 6-1.

The only other seeded player to play Tuesday, No. 6 Ludmilla Richterova of the Czech Republic, advanced with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Pam Nelson of Ross, Calif.
