Virginia GOP lawmaker who missed deadline to run as write-in

August 9, 2019

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia GOP lawmaker says he’ll mount a write-in campaign for reelection after the state Board of Elections rejected an effort to put him on the November ballot because he’d failed to file candidacy paperwork on time.

The Washington Post reports Del. Nick Freitas said Friday morning that he will run for reelection after all, but in a potentially expensive write-in campaign that could divert resources from other races.

Freitas missed a filing deadline and submitted incomplete election paperwork, then withdrew his candidacy last month. He was nominated by local Republicans as a replacement candidate in a failed workaround.

But the Virginia Board of Elections denied this request , and Freitas’ appeal .

The development comes in an election year when Virginia Republicans are fighting to hold on to their narrow House majority.
