Report: Student Shot at N.C. School

March 30, 1998

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) _ A teen-ager was shot today in a middle school bathroom, a television station reported.

A Chapel Hill police lieutenant would not confirm the shooting, although the person who answered the department’s phone said someone had been shot at Grey Culbreth Middle School.

UNC Hospitals confirmed a 13-year-old from the school was in critical condition, the station reported. The hospital did not immediately return a phone call seeking confirmation of the report.

The shooting follows the deaths of five people at a middle school in Jonesboro, Ark., last week. Eleven people also were injured in that shooting.

Parents arriving at the school to investigate the reports were told that school will continue for the day and that the shooting was an ``isolated incident,″ parents told WTVD.

A number of parents were seen arriving at the school to pick up their children.
