NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are lower in afternoon trading on Wall Street, a day after big gains from tech companies pushed indexes to their latest record highs. The price of oil is slumping, dragging down energy stocks. At one point in morning trading in New York, benchmark U.S. crude fell to $43.19, its weakest level since mid-November.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s top economic aide says the White House plans to introduce its tax overhaul during the first two weeks of September. Gary Cohn tells a technology executives meeting in Washington that the plan is to present a finished tax bill to the House and Senate, rather than prolonging talks after its introduction. So far the administration has only released a one-page outline of its principles to lower tax rates and simplify the tax code.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Delta Airlines says it’s the first U.S. airline to use facial recognition technology to speed the process of checking baggage. Four self-serve kiosks for checking bags debuted Monday at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, including one that uses facial recognition technology to match travelers with their passport photos. An airport spokesman says the new kiosks are only for checking bags and don’t replace security lines.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s last health care insurer to sell policies to individuals statewide through the federal Affordable Care Act is asking for a 43.5 percent increase in premium rates for next year. Minnesota-based Medica says the increase is necessary to remain in Iowa. The company insures about 12,500 Iowans through the Affordable Care Act exchange.
NEW YORK (AP) — He’s been overshadowed by Barbie for decades, but now Ken is finally getting some attention. Mattel is introducing 15 new looks for the male doll, giving him new skin tones, body shapes and hair styles such as cornrows and man buns. The makeover is part of the toy company’s plan to make its dolls more diverse and appeal to today’s kids. Barbie received a similar overhaul more than a year ago. Mattel says some of the new Ken dolls will be available for sale immediately.
