UW plans Shepard 20th anniversary commemorations
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — The University of Wyoming has announced numerous events to mark the 20th anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s death this fall.
UW President Laurie Nichols said Monday that the commemoration reflects how Shepard’s death in 1998 shaped the community.
She says the university is an institution that upholds the values of inclusion and diversity.
The Laramie Boomerang reports that a tentative schedule of events in September and October include a concert and film screenings as well as annual events such as a social justice symposium and candlelight vigil.
Shepard, who was gay UW student, was savagely beaten to death at age 21. His death led to enactment of hate crime legislation around the nation.
