TOBY FRANKLIN SHY, 84, of Huntington, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington. He was born July 11, 1934, in Wayne County, a son of the late Delbert and Sadie Gilkerson Shy. Toby graduated from Buffalo High School in 1954. He retired from the Huntington Police Department where he had served as a Lieutenant for 31 years. Toby also served two terms as the Sheriff of Wayne County. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of American Legion Post #93 Kenova, whose members will conduct military graveside rites. Toby was also a member of American Legion Post #16 Huntington. He was a member of the Buena Vista Masonic Lodge No. 60 A.F. & A.M., who will conduct graveside rites. In addition to his parents, Toby was also preceded in death by one son, Dr. Gregory Keith Shy; four brothers, Joe, Wick, Bob and Harold Shy; three sisters, Mona Cole, Berdenia Finley and Julia Harshbarger. Toby is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janice Lewis Shy; one daughter, Michele Shy of Huntington; one son, Dr. Jeffrey Shy, DVM of Kenova; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Pansy Whaley, Olive (Ronnie) Smith and Willa Board; two brothers, Delbert Shy and Vernon Dale Shy; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2019, at the Kenova Church of Christ. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at the church with his nephew, Minister David Smith, officiating. Burial will follow in the Shy-Gilkerson Family Cemetery. Rollins Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House.
