Mario Andretti’s Father Dies
EASTON, Pa. (AP) _ Alvise Andretti, the father of former racing star Mario Andretti, died at his home of cancer. He was 90.
An Italian immigrant who worked most of his life at Bethlehem Steel Corp., Alvise Andretti died Tuesday in Nazareth.
Mario Andretti had been with his ailing father for the past week, missing a ceremony at the California Speedway to dedicate an award.
``He was a gentleman,″ said Dr. Ed Krupa, a retired dentist and family friend from Nazareth. ``He loved to polka dance and he would dance every time we got near a polka band.″
Alvise Andretti brought his family to eastern Pennsylvania in 1955, after they spent seven years in a refugee camp following World War II. Mario and twin brother, Aldo, were born in Montona, Italy.
Andretti is survived by his wife, Rina, his two sons, and his daughter, Anna Marie Burley of Melbourne, Fla.
